TRENČÍN – CITY ON THE RIVER
TRENČÍN – CITY ON THE RIVER
International Urban Design Competition / January 2014
Announced by : City of Trenčín (Slovakia)
Theme : Riverfront and its connection to the historical town centre
The City of Trenčín (Slovakia), is preparing an exciting urban design competition to regenerate its riverfront and to find smart connections between the historical city centre and both banks of the river.
Trenčín is a medium-sized city (55 000 inhabitants) in Slovakia, with a small historical town located on the river Váh, the longest Slovak river. It is the main administrative centre of the Trenčín region/county strategically placed on the Slovak-Czech border and is approximately one hour driving distance from Bratislava - the capital of Slovakia. The city’s interesting history and a unique panorama is emphasised by a fortressed castle built on the rock that dominates the entire area and lends an original atmosphere to the entire city. Currently, the city of Trenčín is undergoing a huge urban transformation, due to the ongoing reconstruction and re-routing of the railway within the framework of modernisation of the European railway corridor. The estimated date of completion for this reconstruction is 2015.
For this reason, the city government is searching for fresh, modern and innovative proposals for the urban design, planning, and re-imaging of the site.
It is anticipated that the winning proposals, which will be selected by a high-profile jury of architects, planners, and public officials, will become the basis for the Land Use Plan of the site. We believe this is the most important urban design competition to take place in Slovakia in many years.
More detailed information about the competition, which launches on 31.January 2014 and concludes by winners announcement by the end of June 2014, are published on www.2014.trencin.sk.
