Project in brief - video message (6min.)
By 2015 the EU is planning to modernize 12km of railway, the part of larger European railway network. In Trencin the planned constructions will significantly influence historic and other inner-city areas particularly sensitive to development. This is a unique opportunity to rethink the city and to make significant urban changes that will work as the catalysts for social, cultural and economic development of the city.
Therefore the city authorities initiated a large-scale public deliberation process named TRENCIN siTY (in translation : TRENCIN is YOU) adressed to all target groups in the city from residents of the inner-city zone and other city areas to representatives of all types of local communities, associations, and institutions and different experts as well. The chosen philosophy is based on approaching to city sustainable development through public participation and open communication with experts and general public.
The key goal of the city is to regenerate the central city zone through changes in the existing Land-Use plan of the city, which will be realised on results of the upcoming urban design competition for the central city zone TRENCIN – CITY ON THE RIVER in January 2014. The terms and conditions of the competition are prepared in cooperation of experts from Slovakia and abroad and after a long-lasting participative process involving all mentioned target groups.
The strategy is in opening the city of Trencin to the inspirations from world and prepare a new vision for the sustainable development of the city together with experts in different fields. We believe that positive urban changes in the central city zone could catalyse the development of the whole Trencin region and become an impuls to its economic growth. The chosen philosophy of participative urban and strategic planning has never been used in this scale in Slovakia or in the Eastern EU region. Therefore we believe Trencin is also able to improve its practices and become excellent example for other cities in Slovakia and around Europe facing the similar urban and development issues of 21st century.
